About Us

Founder/Owner
Paula Keener is Founder of Global Ocean Visions, a woman-owned small business working for the sustainability of the ocean worldwide. Prior to launching Global Ocean Visions, Keener spent 18 years with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) Office of Ocean Exploration and Research directing its Education Program and on Detail to the NOAA Research Office of Ocean Acidification and the NOAA Research Office of International Activities. She has served on national and international committees and advisory boards focused on building ocean capacities across multiple sectors, and has represented the United States in formal delegations, Advisory Groups and Working Groups. She has participated in UN IOC-UNESCO initiatives to build capacity for sustainable development and ocean literacy. 


Keener served on The President's Panel for Ocean Exploration and the National Research Council Committee on Exploration of the Seas. She is Past-President of the National Marine Educators Association. She has taught graduate courses at the University of Charleston and at the University of South Carolina. She serves on the Editorial Board of The Journal of Ocean Technology. She is a recipient of the United States Department of Commerce Bronze and Silver Medal Awards. Keener holds an MS in Marine Biology from the University of Charleston and her research interests focused on fisheries biology, early life history studies and systematics and taxonomy of fishes.
